A friend's teenage son knocked the left front suspension out from under her Celica GT-S. $1500 later and the tricycle is in my garage to be fixed, hooned, or sold for parts!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I was finally home long enough to get in there and pull out the broken bits.

Kinja'd!!!

The front mount for the control arm in the subframe is a bit tweaked, but nothing I probably can't fix. Gonna try to get to the junkyard this week.

How exactly does one knock the suspension out from underneath a car?

Seems a fair price, IMO. a friend of mine just did a turbo engine swap on his. Fun cars if you put a little bit of effort into them.

My guess is excessive speed, understeer, curb.

Ah, seems reasonable.

Well it's what she owed on it, her son wrecked it while she was on vacation with her boyfriend.

Her ex then had it towed to her house and unceremoniously dumped in the middle of her driveway. She came home from a nice thanksgiving beach trip to find her car on blocks.

Six weeks go by and her son and ex have done nothing to help, so we did. Someone needed to. My daughter is excited to replace broken bits on it with me, so I have that to have fun with too.

If it's too busted then there is a local garage that wants it for parts and I'll break even.

A couple questions come to mind after reading your reply.

1. How the hell can anyone still owe $1500 on a 12+ year old car?

2. You mention her son and her ex didn't do anything to help... what about her boyfriend? Why did it become your job to help and not his?

Anyway, if it's a legit GT-S, then the 2ZZ engine might be worth something. I think the MR2 guys like to swap it.

The engine might be worth some money since it's the fun-revving 2ZZ-GE. Could be worth fixing and selling for profit if it's otherwise clean.

It's amazing the used cars that still get financed!

Combune that with a 17 year old and you get this.

Ooof, good one. If you're really lucky the axle and tie-rod end may have made it and you're a strut assembly, control arm, sway bar end link and a ball joint away from driving it. The axle won't have liked that impact though. The tie rod end might have that bend from the factory and I hope the steering rack is OK.

Looks like a good project for you and your daughter. Have fun.

In my opinion, if the son broke it, then the son bought it.

Anyway... $1500 for a GT-S isn't bad in my opinion. If you do the work yourself, the cost shouldn't be too bad,

Close, but the CV-joint on the hub carrier is kerploded as well. Still it's nothing that I can't source in the junkyard one afternoon. Hell, even from the local parts store the bits seem pretty cheap.

I gotta check the oil pan too as it took a glancing blow, but again that's easy to source. Honestly the strut looks straight too and the top mount isn't even deformed at all. Oh and that wheel is trash, but I can put the spare on it to make it move.

Just this corner took the hit as he almost had it stopped. The picture he showed me of it on the curb looked like he had just parked it there as it was pretty much exactly the ride height. Nothing else seems wrinkled or bent.

Thing #1 (14 years old) is stoked to spend some time wrenching with dad in the garage, so that alone is worth it to me.

Oh I agree! If he was mine I would have sold his truck to fix my car.

Homie don't play that game.

If you are going to part it out, look on our lotus forum. Guys love picking these up and getting them as a spare engine for the race season.
